What is a Stigma?
Stigmas are societal disapproval and judgements of a person with a mental illness because they do not fit within the norms of society.
-
Stereotypes: "All people with mental illnesses are dangerous"
-
Prejudice: "I think people that are just saying they have mental illnesses are making excuses for the failures of their life"
-
Discrimination: "I would never trust someone with a mental illness"
-
Refusal to receive treatment, Stigma defers people from seeking help.
-
Social isolation, fear of bringing others down or being a burden to those closest to you.
-
Distorted perception of mental illness, leads to fewer diagnoses and fewer people reaching out for help, mental health is seen to be far less common than it actually is.
